If you think about it. We're slaves to the government. If you really really think about it, people who disobey the gov are punished.
Old testament status was like... around 4-6k years ago. Whole different lifetime. Slaves back then weren't like slaves 100 years ago. They were actually more like servants. Nowadays you can describe them as: House maids, Mexican landscapers, etc... They got paid and fed and taken care of like anyone else. Just lower class. Get it?
